Air is a natural bliss on earth which sustains life. It exists in the atmosphere and is the mixture of many gases. It is a natural resource which is available in abundance. It is so significant that in the absence of air, human life would come to stake. It is also used in various other activities.

Air is an important medium for carrying out various activities. Some of the activities possible due to the presence of air are as follows,
1. Combustion: We know that air is a mixture of various gases, for example; oxygen, nitrogen, carbon dioxide etc. we should remember that whenever we need to burn or combust something, Oxygen is required. Without oxygen a substance cannot be burned. Air contains oxygen and thus combustion or burning is possible only in the presence of air.

2. Respiration: living organisms respire and thus life is sustained in the earth. In respiration living organisms take in oxygen and release carbon dioxide. For oxygen to be available in plenty, air is the most important medium.

3. Photosynthesis: It is the process through which the plants or autotrophs prepare their own food. We also know that we directly depend on the plants for food and energy. For photosynthesis plants require carbon dioxide. Air acts as a medium for the carbon dioxide for plants and thus air is an important process for photosynthesis.

4. Medium for sound: If a person speaks to us and we are able to hear him/her, then it is due to the presence of air around us. Sound needs a medium to travel and in earth air the medium through which the sound travels. Hence, hearing the sound on earth is possible due to air.

5. Air protects us: Air helps to protect us from the harmful radiations and celestial particles like the x-rays, cosmic rays, meteors, asteroids which can be too destructive. Air also reduces the possibility of destruction by meteorites and asteroids.

Note: Air is an important medium and thus we need to keep it clean. Increasing industrialization and urbanization have led to massive air pollution and have deteriorated the quality of air.
