Latex is a colloidal solution of rubber particles which are:
A. Positively charged
B. Negatively charges
C. Neutral
D. Can be negatively and positively charged
Solution
Colloidal solutions are defined as the colloidal suspensions which are considered as a mixture in which the substances are regularly suspended in a fluid. A colloid appears to be a tiny and a small material which has been spread out uniformly through another substance. Latex is a milky white colour fluid which is generally found from the rubber trees.
Complete answer:
The latex is considered as a colloidal dispersion of rubber in water. The latex is a negatively charged substance in which the rubber particles are made up by the negatively charged protein membrane. The natural rubber is the rubber which we obtain by the process of coagulation of the latex. But the latex does not tend to coagulate on its own. The acid is added to the latex to proceed its coagulation. As we know that the acid contains the hydrogen ion by which the negatively charged protein membranes get neutralised. As the charge that is the similar negative charge on the particles gets neutralised so they stop repelling each other and collide with each other.
Note: The natural rubber is considered as a natural polymer which we get from the latex. The natural rubber is formed by comprising the monomers of 2- methyl but-1,3- diene. This monomer has the general name which is isoprene and it is an alkene. So the natural rubber is formed by the polymerisation of isoprene.
