Question

Physics Question on Thermodynamics terms

Initially two gas samples 11 and 22 are at the same condition. The volume of the two are halved, one isothermally and the other adiabatically. What is the relation between the final pressure P1P_1 and P2 P_2 ?

A

P1=P2P_1 = P_2

B

P1>P2P_1 > P_2

C

P2>P1P_2 > P_1

D

Cannot be determined

Answer

P2>P1P_2 > P_1

Explanation

Solution

For isothermal process
PV=KPV = K (constant)
P=KV(1)P =\frac{ K }{ V } \ldots(1)
=KV/2=2K=\frac{ K }{ V / 2}=2 K
For adiabatic process
PVγ=KPV ^{\gamma}= K (constant)
P=KVγ..(2)\therefore P =\frac{ K }{ V ^{\gamma}} \ldots . .(2)
=K(V/2)γK(2γ)=\frac{ K }{( V / 2)^{\gamma}}- K \left(2^{\gamma}\right)
From Eqs. (1) and (2), we have
P2>P1P _{2} > P _{1}
