Ovary or the pistil’s basal portion represents the female organ of the plant. It is known to consist majorly of different ovules thereby resulting in the development of seeds after undergoing the process of fertilization. The ovary matures itself into a fruit featuring either a dry or a fleshy stuff enclosing numerous seeds. A simple or the unicarpellate ovary arises out of a single carpel which is an evolutionarily modified version of the leaf. It features one locule or the chamber featuring innumerable ovules. On the contrary, a multi-carpellate ovary features more than one carpel and several locules.
The position of the ovary in itself is a useful characteristic feature which attaches itself to other floral parts. Different plants are classified according to the placement of their ovaries as well as with their relation to the petal and sepal arrangement. This point of attachment of the ovaries to the petals and sepals is known as the plants insertion point. They can either be superior or half-inferior or inferior and accordingly their flowers are labelled as hypogynous or epigynous or epigynous respectively
