Question

Question: In what situation can you be at rest and moving at the same time?...

In what situation can you be at rest and moving at the same time?

Explanation

Solution

If you are sitting on a moving bus then you are in motion to a man who is sitting on a bench but you are also at rest to a man sitting on the same bus. To find the equation for such a situation we have to consider two frames of reference where one is at rest and another is moving. Where Newton’s laws are constant.

Complete step by step answer:
If you are sitting on a moving train talking to a passenger sitting in front of you, then suddenly you see a man from the window of your train. Then the man who is sitting on the bench will see you are in motion because from his point of view your position is changing with time. So you are in motion with respect to the man sitting on the bench. But when you observe the passenger sitting in front of view you are at rest because from his point of view you are sitting on the same seat in which you are sitting before so from his point of view your position is the same or it is not changing. So you are at rest with respect to the passengers on the train. So this is a position where you are moving or at rest at the same time.

Note: We can say while sitting on a chair we are also moving or at rest at the same time because we are on earth but the earth is moving around the sun so if an astronaut who is at rest observing you from space then even though you are sitting on a chair but with respect to him you will be moving.
