In the list given below, those that reproduce by asexual method are
(i) Banana
(ii) Dog
(iii) Yeast
(iv) Amoeba
A. (ii) and (iv)
B. (i), (iii) and (iv)
C. (i) and (iv)
D. (ii), (iii) and (iv)
Solution
Asexual reproduction is the type of reproduction in which only one parent is involved. In this method gamete formation or fusion does not take place. Asexual methods involve bud formation, binary fission, endospore formation, conidia formation and zoospore formation.
Complete answer:
Yeast reproduces through budding. In bud formation, the cell wall becomes thin, an outgrowth arises. This outgrowth is known as bud. The nucleus also divides into two. One nucleus goes into the bud while the other remains with the parent. The bud grows in size and cuts off from the parent. The bud can now grow into an individual plant.
When only a single bud grows from the yeast, it is known as unipolar budding. When two or more than two buds grow from different points, it is known as bipolar budding.
Under unfavorable conditions, a long row of cells is formed which is known as pseudomycelium.
Amoeba reproduces through binary fission. The genetic material replicates through mitosis. The amoeba grows in size and divides to produce offspring.
Bananas reproduce through vegetative propagation. They produce rhizomes which grow into plantlets called pups. These pups are planted into the soil which later grows into plants.
Only dogs produce sexually i.e. the male and female gametes are produced and they fuse to give rise to offspring.
Hence, the correct answer is option (B).
Note: Here it must be noted that in vegetative mode of reproduction, the parts of the plant other than reproductive parts are involved in the reproduction. These parts are the stem like the rhizome of ginger, bulb of onion, and the leaves like the leaves of Bryophyllum.
