In the following flow diagram, identify the correct categories.
I. Wheat and mango belong to the same category B.
II. Potato, brinjal and makoi belong to the same category E.
III. Muscidae, anacardiaceae and angiosperms belong to category A.
IV. Gorilla, gibbon and chimpanzee belong to the same category D.
V. Dicotyledonae and monocotyledonae belong to category C.
Select the correct statement.
A. IV, II, III
B. I, III, V
C. II, IV
D. V, II, IV
Solution
Hint:- In the system of classification, the organisms that share similar characteristics are placed in the same group. These groups are further placed in larger groups based on the similarities. The larger groups are again placed in still larger groups known as categories. Each category has a specific name. There are seven major categories namely Kingdom, phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, and Species.
Complete Answer:- The flow chart given in the question shows hierarchy classification. Here, C depicts phylum /kingdom, B depicts class, D depicts Order, A depicts Family and E stands for Genus followed by species. Thus, the Kingdom represents the highest rank whereas species represent the lowest rank as represented below.
KINGDOM -> PHYLUM/DIVISION -> CLASS -> ORDER -> FAMILY -> GENUS -> SPECIES
Wheat and mango do not belong to the same class but the same division Angiospermae. Potato (Solanum tuberosum), brinjal (S. melongena), and makoi (S. nigrum) all belong to the same genus that is solanum. Muscidae is the family name of House flies and Anacardiaceae is the family name for Mango and is commonly known as the cashew or mango family. Thus, Angiospermae, Muscidae, and Anacardiaceae do not belong to the same family. Gorilla, gibbon, and chimpanzee belong to the same order primate. According to the Bentham and Hooker Classification (1862-63), Dicotyledonae and Monocotyledonae were two different classes that belonged to the same division phanerogamia.
So, the correct answer is option D.
Note:- The system of classification was introduced to group individuals sharing similar features into a single group for convenience. This classification was formulated by Linnaeus, and thus, it is also known as the Linnaean hierarchy
