Question
Question: In the following circuit potential at point ‘A’ is zero then determine potential at each point. !...
In the following circuit potential at point ‘A’ is zero then determine potential at each point.
Solution
Electric potential always goes from higher to lower. Here the points on which the potential has to be found are in series with each other and the rest of the circuit is in parallel with each other. Here we have been given the potential of 0V and 10V.
Complete step by step solution:
We have been given the potential at point A is zero. So, the points which are in series with the point A and have no electronics devices such as resistor, capacitor, inductor, etc. will have the same potential. So, The points A, B, C and D will all have Zero potential and similarly, the potential at point E is 10V (Given in the diagram the higher potential is 10V and there is no electronic devices in between 10V and E so the potential will be the same), there are no electronic devices between the points E,F,G,H so the potential at points E, F, G and H will be 10V.
For Points I, J and K:
Consider each point separately:
Point “I” is between the line F and B. The potential at point F is 10 volts and the potential at B is 0 volts. We have been given the lower potential at I which is given as 5 volts so, the higher unknown potential at I would be Potential (higher) at point f + Potential (lower) at point I = 10+5 = 15V. Then potential (higher) at point I is 15V.
Point J:
Point “J” is opposite to Point “I”. Here the same process would be carried out Potential at point C + Potential at point J = 0+15V = 15V. The total potential at point J is 15 volts.
Point K:
Point K is similar to the point I. The potential at point k will be equal to the potential at point H + potential at point K = 10+5 = 15V.
The potential at point A, B, C, and D is 0 volts and the potential at point E, F, G, and H would be 10 volts. The potential at points I, J, and K will be 15 volts.
Note: Here give a proper reason as to why the potential would be the same for the points in series with each other and separately find out the potentials at the points I, J and k. Here we need not to calculate potential at individual points. It is a conceptual question.
