Question
Physics Question on laws of motion
In the figure shown a block of weight 10 N is resting on a horizontal surface (figure). The coefficient of static friction between the block and surface is force of 3.5 N will keep the block in uniform motion, once it has been set in motion. A horizontal force of 3 N is applied to the block then:
First it will move with a constant velocity for some time and then will have accelerated motion
the block move having accelerated motion over the surface
The block move over the surface with a constant velocity
The block will not move
The block will not move
Solution
Since, the force of 3.5 N will keep the block in uniform motion it means no net force will act on the body as the applied force of 3.5 N is just sufficient to overcome the force of friction. If the force applied is less than 3.5 N the block will not move. Hence, when 3N is applied, block will not move.
So, the correct option is (D): The block will not move.
