Question
Chemistry Question on General Principles and Processes of Isolation of Elements
In the cyanide extraction process of silver from argentite ore, the oxidising and reducing agents used are
A
O2 and CO respectively
B
O2 and Zn dust respectively
C
HNO3 and Zn dust respectively
D
HNO3 and CO respectively
Answer
O2 and Zn dust respectively
Explanation
Solution
The reactions involved in extraction of silver by cyanide process are
Ag2S+CN−+O2→[Ag(CN)2]−+SO2...(i)
[Ag(CN)2]−+Zn→[Zn(CN)4]2−+Ag...(ii)
In reaction (i), sulphide is oxidised to S02 by oxygen. In the reaction (ii), silver ion (Ag+) is reduced to Ag by Zn. Therefore, O2 is oxidising agent and Zn is reducing agent.
