Question
Chemistry Question on p -Block Elements
In one of the following reactions HNO3 does not behave as an oxidizing agent. Identify it:
I2+10HNO32HIO3+10NO2+4H2O
3Cu+8HNO33Cu(NO3)2 +2NO+4H2O
4Zn+10HNO34Zn(NO3)2 +NH4NO3+3H2O
2HNO3+P2O52HPO3+N2O5
2HNO3+P2O52HPO3+N2O5
Solution
[a] I2+10HN+5O3
2HIO3+10NO+2+4H2O
In the reaction HNO3
is acting as oxidizing agent because i|Ls oxidation state is decreasing from + 5 to + 2.
[b] 3Cu+8HN+5O3
3Cu(NO3)2+2NO+2+4H2O
It is reaction in which HNO3 is acting as oxidising agent because oxidation number of nitrogen is decreasing.
[c] 4Zn+10HN+5O34Zn(NO3)2
+NH4NO+23+3H2O
∴ It is also a reaction, in which HNO3 is oxidizing agent.
[d] 2HNO3+P2O52HPO3+N2O5
P2O5 dehydrating agent.
So in this reaction HNO3 does not act as oxidizing agent.
