But unicellular organisms are unable to develop such complex mechanisms as a result of which the process by which the unicellular organisms remove waste is simple diffusion.

Diffusion is defined as the movement of substances from a region of higher concentration to a region of lower concentration. Due to the metabolic activities of the unicellular organisms, the waste products start accumulating inside them and after a given point of time, the concentration of waste product inside the cell is much higher than the external environment which facilitates diffusion.

Diffusion is said to occur directly by crossing the cell membrane and no special mechanisms is required for it. Some unicellular organisms also carry out waste removal through the help of contractile vacuoles which consists of lysosome that digests the waste. The wastes enter the contractile vacuole which then moves towards the plasma membrane where they burst open releasing the contents outside the cell.
