In male cockroaches, sperms are stored in which part of the reproductive system?
A. Testes
B. vas deferens
C. Seminal vesicles
D. Mushroom glands
Solution
In male cockroaches the sperm are stored in the seminal vesicles and are glued together in the form of bundles which are known as spermatophores and discharged during copulation.
Complete answer:
Option A- Testes-
These are situated amidst fat bodies between the fourth and sixth abdominal segments dorsolaterally there is a pair of three-lobed testes. Each testis consists of 30-40 small whitish transparent follicles. In these follicles, spermatozoa are formed. It is seen that in young cockroaches they are well developed and functional while in adult ones they are non-functional and greatly reduced.
Option B- Vas deferens –
They arise from each testis, there are a vas deferens. The two vasa deferentia, one from every testis, run posteriorly downwards and open into the ejaculatory duct by seminal vesicles. The sperms which are formed inside the testes are carried by the vasa deferentia and passed on to the seminal vesicles.
Option C- Seminal vesicles-
They can be found on the ventral surface of the anterior part of the ejaculatory duct where a sac is formed of short bulbous tubules known as seminal vesicles. Then the sperms are stored in the seminal vesicles and are glued together in the form of bundles known as spermatophores which are discharged during copulation.
Option D- Mushroom Shaped Gland-
It is also known as the utricular gland. The junction of two vasa deferentia and ejaculatory ducts in the 6th and 7th abdominal segments are surrounded by an accessory reproductive gland called mushroom shaped gland. This gland is a large whitish gland which is made up of two kinds of glandular tubules – (i)first being the peripheral, long, slender tubules utriculi majores, whose secretion also forms the covering of spermatophore and (ii)Second being the central, short tubules, utriculi breviores, whose secretion nourishes the sperms.
So, the right answer is Seminal vesicles.
Note:
In cockroaches, the sperm are stored in the seminal vesicles which is a part of the reproductive system of the cockroach. In seminal vesicles, the sperms are glued together in the form of bundles which are known as spermatophores, and discharged during copulation.
