In between spermatogonia ............ are found.
A. Germinal cells
B. Sertoli cells
C. Epithelial cells
D. Lymph space
Solution
Spermatogonia are the male germ cells which give rise to the formation of sperm and it is found in the seminiferous tubule i.e., mainly formed in the wall of it.
Complete answer:
First of all, you should know what spermatogonia is. Spermatogonia are the male germ cells formed in the wall of a seminiferous tubule and it gives rise to spermatocytes by mitosis.
There is presence of 1-3 highly coiled seminiferous tubules in each lobule of testes where sperms are produced and each seminiferous tubule is lined on its inside by the two types of cells which are spermatogonia and sertoli cells.
This spermatogonia or male germ cells give rise to sperm by the mitotic division whereas the sertoli cells provide nutrition to the germ cells.
Outside the seminiferous tubules there are regions called as interstitial spaces which contain small blood vessels and Leydig cells which synthesize and secrete androgens i.e., testicular hormone. There is presence of some other immunologically competent cells too.
If we look at options now:
Option A is Germinal cells. Germinal cells are those which give rise to gametes. This option is incorrect as in between the spermatogonia sertoli cells are found not germinal cells which function to provide nutrition to the germ cells. Therefore this option gets eliminated.
Option B is Sertoli cells. Sertoli cells are the supporting cells of seminiferous tubules and in between the spermatogonia these cells are found and there this option is the correct one.
Option C is Epithelial cells. These cells are found on the surface of the body i.e., on skin, blood vessels, urinary tract, etc. This option is incorrect as epithelial cells are not found between the spermatogonia. Therefore, this option gets eliminated.
Last option D is Lymph space. Lymph spaces are the spaces in the connective tissue and this cannot be the correct option as these spaces are found in lymph and it is not found in between spermatogonia. Therefore, this option gets eliminated.
Thus, the correct answer is option B i.e., Sertoli cells.
Note: Seminiferous tubules are found in each lobule of testes and in seminiferous tubules, there are male germ cells and sertoli cells. Male germ cells are spermatogonia which give rise to spermatocytes by dividing mitotically. Therefore, the correct answer is sertoli cells.
