Question
Physics Question on Kinetic molecular theory of gases
If average velocity becomes 4 times then t-hat will be the effect on rms velocity at that Temperature?
1.4 times
4 times
2 times
41 times
4 times
Solution
Ratio of vav/vrms remains constant.
Average speed is the arithmetic mean of the speeds of molecules in a gas at a given temperature,
i.e., vav=(v1+v2+v3+…)/N
and according to kinetic theory of gases,
vav=Mπ8RT... (i)
Also, rms speed (root mean square speed)
is defined as the square root of mean of squares of the speed of different molecules, i.e., vrms=(v12+v22+v32+…)/N
=(vˉ)2
and according to kinetic theory of gases,
vrms=M3RT... (ii)
From Eqs. (i) and (ii), we get
vav=(3π8)vrms
=0.92vrms… (iii)
Therefore, vrmsvav= constant
Hence, root mean square velocity is also become 4 times.
