If an egg is not fertilized then what happens? Explain it.
Solution
Females give birth to their young ones. The body of the female starts to prepare itself from a very young age. This occurs in the form of a menstrual cycle. This makes the body strong and used to enough to support and carry a baby for long nine months in the womb.
Complete answer:
The egg in the ovaries of the women uterus is the female gamete which fuses with the male sperm to give the zygote. The zygote is fertilized in the fallopian tube and it is implanted in the uterus of the female.
When this egg is not fertilized, it passes alone from the fallopian tube to the uterus. From there it passes out from the female body with the endometrium which was formed for preparing the uterus for implantation. This endometrium and egg are shredded in the form of blood.
This whole process takes 28 days approximately in humans to occur. So this cycle occurs once a month and is called the menstrual cycle.
The endometrium gets thick if the egg gets fertilized and gets implanted. This will further help the embryo in the nourishment but if the egg does not fertilize, this lining will start to shred. This shedding of blood continues for 5-7 days.
Note: There can be fertilization of egg and sperm even when a female is undergoing a menstrual cycle. The chances are rare though. Cold weather affects the cycle by increasing the pain level. Contraceptive methods are adopted to avoid unwanted pregnancies. STD’s can also flourish via intercourse.
