ICBN is a set of rules and recommendations that deals with the formal botanical namingof plants. ICBN is independent of zoological nomenclature. The foundations of ICBN are given in a book written by C. Linnaeus named PhUosophia Botanica. The rank of speciesis the basic and relative order of the ranks of taxa are as: species, genus, tribe, family, order, series, class, division, and kingdom. The different ranks or categories have the following specific endings of their names division - phyla, class-ae, family-aceae.

International Code of Botanical Nomenclature (ICBN) is now known as ‘The International Code of Nomenclature for algae, fungi, and plants (ICN). The name was changed at the International Botanical Congress in Melbourne in July 2011.
