How would you obtain the following using sulphuric acid as one of the reactants.
(i) An acid salt using caustic soda.
(ii) An acid salt using rock salt
(iii) A neutral gas using an organic acid
(iv) A neutral gas using an active metal

Explanation

Solution

Sulphuric acid is highly acidic in nature and it reacts with different bases and forms the respective salts as the products. With some chemicals like metals, sulphuric acid produces a neutral gas as the product.

Complete answer:
- In the question it is asked to write the reaction of sulphuric acid with the given chemicals in the question.
(i) We have to prepare an acid salt by reacting the sulphuric acid with caustic soda.
- The chemical formula of caustic soda is NaOH and the chemical formula of the sulphuric acid is H2SO4{{H}_{2}}S{{O}_{4}} .
- Now we can write the formation of the acid salt by using the NaOH and sulphuric acid and it is as follows.
H2SO4+NaOHNaCl+H2O{{H}_{2}}S{{O}_{4}}+NaOH\to NaCl+{{H}_{2}}O
- In the above chemical reaction sulphuric acid is going to react with sodium hydroxide (caustic soda) and forms sodium chloride (Acid salt) as the product.
(ii) We have to prepare an acid salt by reacting the sulphuric acid with rock salt.
- The chemical formula of rock salt is NaCl and the chemical formula of the sulphuric acid is H2SO4{{H}_{2}}S{{O}_{4}} .
- Now we can write the formation of the acid salt by using the NaCl and sulphuric acid and it is as follows.
H2SO4+NaClNaHSO4+HCl{{H}_{2}}S{{O}_{4}}+NaCl\to NaHS{{O}_{4}}+HCl
- In the above chemical reaction sulphuric acid is going to react with sodium chloride and forms sodium hydrogen sulphate and hydrochloric acid as the products.
(iii) We have to prepare a neutral gas by reacting sulphuric acid with an organic acid.
- We can take oxalic acid as an organic acid and the chemical reaction is as follows.
H2C2O4+H2SO4H2O+CO2+CONeutral gas{{H}_{2}}{{C}_{2}}{{O}_{4}}+{{H}_{2}}S{{O}_{4}}\to {{H}_{2}}O+C{{O}_{2}}+\underset{\text{Neutral gas}}{\mathop{CO}}\,
(iv) We have to prepare a neutral gas by reacting sulphuric acid with a metal.
We can take metal as zinc and the chemical reaction is as follows.
Zn+H2SO4ZnSO4+H2Neutral gasZn+{{H}_{2}}S{{O}_{4}}\to ZnS{{O}_{4}}+\underset{\text{Neutral gas}}{\mathop{{{H}_{2}}}}\,
- In the above chemical reaction sulphuric acid is going to react with zinc metal and forms zinc sulphate and hydrogen gas as the products.

Note:
Sulphuric acid is a very strong acid in nature and going to react with all types of bases and forms respective salts at the same time sulphuric acid is going to react with few active metals and forms a neutral gas as the product.
