Question

Question: How sound travels in space ?...

How sound travels in space ?

Explanation

Solution

Sound is mainly considered as a form of energy which consists of mechanical waves which travel in a medium. Sound is basically produced by a vibrating body which creates disturbance in the medium and the medium propagates the sound.

Complete answer:
Let us suppose the medium of sound transmission as air, in air the molecules are in the form of longitudinal waves in which in compression and rarefaction of molecules happens.Vibrating body creates a disturbance in the compression and rarefaction of waves.Due to the disturbance the particles of the surrounding medium the medium creates sound.

Our ears are capable of detecting the disturbance created by the sound source in the particles of medium and we hear the sound. Thus it is cleared that sound always needs a medium to be travelled and reach its destination. As space does not have any medium for sound waves to create disturbance and to go along with. Space has vacuum due to which sound cannot be heard in space.

Note: Human ears can detect only a range of sound frequency. Sounds below twenty Hz are infrasonic and above twenty thousand Hz are ultrasonic. The frequency of sound between these two ranges can be heard by humans.
