The lungs are situated in the chest cavity on either side of the breastbone and are divided into five main parts (lobes). It is the role of the lungs to remove carbon dioxide from the blood and introduce oxygen to it. To do this the heart and lungs work together.

There are thousands of thin tubes in the lungs that end up in packets of small air sacs (alveoli). Blood vessels that attach to a system of veins and arteries that carry blood through the body are enclosed in each one of these sacs.

The pulmonary (lung) artery and its branches carry blood that contains tons of carbon dioxide and no oxygen into these vessels when you take a breath. It leaves the blood and enters the air with carbon dioxide, and oxygen leaves the air and enters the blood.
It is returned to the heart and pumped into the rest of the body until the blood has enough of oxygen and no carbon dioxide.
