Islets of Langerhans was discovered by Paul Langerhans (1869). It is a form of an endocrine part. Each islets of Langerhans contains hundreds of small cells and several blood capillaries and sinusoids. Its cells are distinguished into four types [a] Alpha or A cells constitute about 15% of pancreatic islet cells and secrete glucagon. [b] Beta or B cells constitute about 80% of pancreatic islet cells and secrete insulin. [c] Delta or D cells constitute about 5% of pancreatic islet cells and secrete somatostatin. [d] F cells constitute the remainder of pancreatic islet cells and secrete pancreatic polypeptide.
