A biological species is a group of organisms that can reproduce with one another and produce fertile offspring in nature. The term species can also be defined as the most fundamental category in the taxonomy system.

Historically, the highest taxonomic rank, or the most general taxon used in classifying organisms, is kingdom. However, in Carl Woese's new three-domain system, introduced in 1990, the domain is the most general taxon, with the kingdom coming in second.

The number and variety of species increase from lower to higher levels. The diversity increases from the species to the highest Kingdom, while the opposite is true from the Kingdom to the species. Below the species, there are varying ties and sub-varieties, with opportunities increasing from the species to higher levels. Higher levels are found in species, genus, families, orders, and so on.
