Question
Question: How are biomes formed?...
How are biomes formed?
Solution
A biome is a group of organisms that share common characteristics and these characteristics are related to the environment in which they exist and are found on all continents.
Complete answer:
A biome is the entire collection of all living organisms found in a given ecosystem at a given time. It not only consists of plants and animals but also the microorganisms. However, a separate term micro biome is used to describe the entire collection of microorganisms.
The biome of a place is defined by its environmental conditions such as temperature, humidity, rainfall, soil content, food source, altitude, latitude and many more. A biome surrounds a huge region which has different individual habitats. However a biome can be defined on a much smaller scale.
Example: all the microorganisms present in the human body can be defined as human microbiome.
A biome is formed when there is interaction of climate and ecological environment with the help of succession. The continuation of biome is totally dependent on the climatic condition of the planet with tiny swap in far zones leading to biome conversion.
Succession is an important characteristic which helps in the formation of biomes as it is an interconnection of both climate as well as the ecological environment. If both of them are not changed then it results in succession in several years. Example: In West Virginia if the coal mine is reckless, then after few time it will rescue into land, grasses as well as weeds starts producing after some time and after some time trees and shrubs emerge not only this tall tree with good roots starts emerging and the entire region will be filled with the forest which means there is a beginning of biome in West Virginia.
There are two kinds of biome:
-Terrestrial biome: are also called land biomes and are related with the climate or climax vegetation occurring in an area. It is also called the biological community of plants, animals, birds that are stable and are dominant over a period of time. Example: Tundra, Desert
-Aquatic or water biome: The water biome mainly consists of aquatic plants or animals. The aquatic areas tend to be more humid and the temperature of the air on the cooler side.
Note: In 1975 Whittaker after studying the growth pattern of plants and animals has given four parameters to demarcate the distinct biome. These are tidal land levels, swap in temperature by latitude and altitude as well as climatic moisture gradient. He found that such gradients change from moderate to extreme with the changes in the production of distinct organisms.
