Question
Question: Given, \(CH{{I}_{3}}\) is the structure of? (a)- Chloroform (b)- Iodoform (c)- Both a and b ...
Given, CHI3 is the structure of?
(a)- Chloroform
(b)- Iodoform
(c)- Both a and b
(d)- None of these
Solution
It’s a pale yellow, crystalline, volatile substance, it has a penetrating and distinctive odor and the smell is sometimes referred to as that of hospitals, where the compound is commonly used. It is sweetish in taste. It is occasionally used as a disinfectant.
Complete answer:
Let us know about Iodoform:
Iodoform is an organic iodine compound with the formula CHI3 and a tetrahedral molecular geometry. It is a relatively water insoluble yellow solid that is chemically reactive in free-radical reactions. Due to its antimicrobial properties following topical administration, minimal levels of iodoform may be found in disinfectants and it is more primarily used for veterinary purposes. Iodoform has also been found in dental paste and root canal filling materials in combination with other intracanal medications due to its radiopacity. Iodoform is soluble in fatty acids and decomposes releasing iodine in nascent state, when in contact with secretions or endodontic infections.
Iodoform test is used to check the presence of carbonyl compounds with the structure R−CO−CH3 or alcohols with the structure R−CH(OH)−CH3 in a given unknown substance. The reaction of iodine, a base and a methyl ketone gives a yellow precipitate along with an “antiseptic” smell.
CHI3 is the structure of Iodoform.
Therefore, option B is the required answer.
Note:
Iodoform is used as an antiseptic, as it comes in contact with organic matter of skin it decomposes to give free iodine which acts as an antiseptic. It is used for treating skin infections, bruises, boils, etc.
