Respiration involving proteins as respiratory substrate is called protoplasmic respiration whereas floating respiration is the respiration which uses carbohydrates and fats as respiration substrates. Protoplasmic respiration cannot be continued for long as it depletes protoplasm of structural and functional proteins as well as liberates toxic ammonia.
