Simple Harmonic Motion-

To define it, we say that it is that periodic motion where the restoring force acts proportional to the displacement of the object from its mean position.

The common applications of SHM are-

I)In musical instruments-
Whether be string instruments or percussion instruments, the whole of the music is a result of vibrations. Not every vibration is a SHM and not every vibration generates a musical note. Whenever the table is tapped or the guitar string is plucked, one can very well see the SHM patterns in it. It is the displacement that creates the famous musical notes we hear.

II)The motion of a swing-
The to and fro motion of a swing in a park is also an example of a SHM. The oscillatory motion of a swing, when given a force and its coming back is a clear example of SHM.
One can also observe SHM in clocks, pendulums etc.

It is not necessary that every periodic motion will be an SHM. It should be noted that SHM is the simplest case of an oscillatory motion. SHM is oscillatory and periodic.
