Give any ‘two’ examples of endangered species.
Solution
Hint:- IUCN i.e. the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources is maintaining a Red Data Book that contains a record of animals that are known to be in danger.
Complete Answer:- On the basis of the degree of threat eight red list categories have been identified- endangered, vulnerable, rare, extinct, extinct in the wild, lower risk, data deficient and not evaluated species. It is believed that at least 10 percent of the living species are in danger and fall under one of these categories.
Endangered species are the taxa or species whose numbers have been reduced to a critical level or whose natural habitats have been adversely affected. So these are the organisms that are near extinction and may become extinct if these causal factors continue to operate.
In India, the wildlife protection act of 1972 provides four schedules categorizing fauna of India based on their conservation status. Schedule I lists the rare and endangered species that are provided legal protection. In India about 81 species of mammals, 38 species of birds and 18 species of amphibians and reptiles are considered endangered.
Some examples of endangered species in India are:
- Berberis nilghiriensis- It is a critically endangered plant species.
- Sus salvanius (Pygmy hog) - It is a critically endangered animal species.
- Bentinckia nicobarica – It is an endangered plant species.
- Ailurus fulgens (Red panda) - It is an endangered animal species.
Note:- Threatened species are those living species that have been greatly reduced in their numbers and whose natural habitats have been disturbed due to which these are near extinction and may become extinct if the causative factors continue.
