Fossil fuels are natural but non-renewable sources of energy that are depleting at exponential rates. The large dependence of human popularity on fossil fuels for satisfying their energy requirement has led to their depletion in nature.
Coal is one such fossil fuel that is produced from the burial of dead extracts. The slow decomposition process of dead and decaying plants or plant extracts including huge forests over a period of millions of years under drastic conditions of extreme heat and pressure results in the formation of a dark black or brownish sedimentary rock called Coal.
The coal obtained from natural resources is processed and treated chemically in various industries. One such industrial process is called coking through which coke is obtained from coal. The naturally occurring coal is extracted and treated in high temperature coke ovens that are airless. The volatile substances present in coal along with water are removed as a byproduct in the baking process to obtain a dense, grey, porous and non-volatile fuel with limited impurities called Coke.
Coal tar is a byproduct of the coking process and it is a carbon rich solid fuel. The volatile substance removal from coal to form coal results in coal tar formation. Coal tar is less pure than Coke.
