From the following data of DH, of the following reactions,

C(s) + 12\frac{1}{2}O2 (g) \longrightarrowCO (g) Δ\DeltaH = – 110 kJ

C(s) + H2O (g) \longrightarrowCO (g) + H2(g) Δ\DeltaH = 132 kJ

What is the mole composition of the mixture of steam and oxygen on being passed over coke at 1273 K, to maintain constant temperature:

A

0.5 : 1

B

1 : 0.6

C

0.8 : 1

D

1 : 1

Answer

1 : 0.6

Explanation

Solution

Let mixture contain x mole of steam & y mole oxygen then,

Here, temperature is constant. So, amount of heat released = amount of heat gain

x × 132 = y(220) \Rightarrow xy\frac{x}{y} = 220132\frac{220}{132} = 1.661\frac{1.66}{1}

\Rightarrow y : x = 1 : 0.6
