Biology Question on Strategies For Enhancement in Food Production
From IR-8 and Taichung Native-I, which variety of semi- dwarf crop was derived?
Sugarcane
Rice
Wheat
Maize
Rice
Solution
The correct answer is option (B) : Rice
Taichung Native -1 is a semi-dwarf variety of rice native to Taiwan.
Between 1960 and 2000, there was a significant increase in rice production, rising from 35 million tonnes to 89.5 million tonnes. This remarkable growth was primarily attributed to the development of semi-dwarf varieties of wheat and rice. Notably, semi-dwarf rice strains were derived from two prominent sources: IR-8, created at the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) in the Philippines, and Taichung Native-1 from Taiwan. These derivative varieties were introduced in 1966. Subsequently, India developed even more productive semi-dwarf varieties, namely Jaya and Ratna.
