Question

Biology Question on The Male Reproductive System

For formation of 200200 sperms, how many 22^{\circ} spermatocytes are required?

A

100100

B

200200

C

5050

D

400400

Answer

100100

Explanation

Solution

Each primary spermatocyte undergoes two successive divisions, called maturation divisions. The first maturation division- is reductional or meiotic. Hence, the primary spermatocyte divides into two haploid daughter cells called secondary spermatocytes. Both secondary (2)(2^{\circ}) spermatocytes now undergo second maturation division which is an ordinary mitotic division to form four haploid spermatids, by each primary spermatocyte. Thus for producing 200200 sperm, 100100 secondary spermatocytes are required as each 22^\circ spermatocyte forms 22 sperms.
