Question
Physics Question on electrostatic potential and capacitance
Five capacitors, each of capacitance value C are connected as shown in the figure. The ratio of capacitance between P and R, and the capacitance between P and Q, is :
3:01
5:02
2:03
1:01
2:03
Solution
The capacitors having same charge through them will be in series combination. If a source is connected between points P and R, same charge will flow through two capacitors in arms PQ and QR. Similarly, same charge will flow through capacitors in arms PT, TS and SR. So, equivalent capacitance of left side C′=C+CC×C=2C and equivalent capacitance of right side C′′1=C1+C1+C1=C3 ∴C′′=3C Now, C′ and C' ' will in parallel combination, hence, C1=C′+C′′=2C+3C=65C Similarly, if a source is connected between points P and Q, then equivalent capacitance C2=C+4C =45C Hence, the required ratio is given by C2C1=5C/45C/6=32
