Find the product Cl2O6+NaOH?C{{l}_{2}}{{O}_{6}}+NaOH\to ?
A. NaClO4NaCl{{O}_{4}}
B. NaOClNaOCl
C. NaClO2NaCl{{O}_{2}}
D. NaClO3NaCl{{O}_{3}}

Explanation

Solution

DIchlorine hexoxide can exist in two different forms, in the gaseous form it has a chemical formula Cl2O6C{{l}_{2}}{{O}_{6}} and in the liquid or solid form the chloride ionises and becomes [ClO2]+[ClO4]{{[Cl{{O}_{2}}]}^{+}}{{[Cl{{O}_{4}}]}^{-}}.
Upon reaction with a base these ionised parts could form different products, depending on the chemical formula of the base.

Complete step by step answer:
If we consider the question we can see that it asks us the product of a reaction which takes place between dichlorine hexoxide and sodium hydroxide.
DIchlorine hexoxide has the chemical formula Cl2O6C{{l}_{2}}{{O}_{6}} when it exists in gaseous state, but when it is converted to solid or liquid state the chlorine which is present in the dichlorine hexoxide, ionises into a dark red coloured ionic compound named, chloride perchlorate which has the chemical formula [ClO2]+[ClO4]{{[Cl{{O}_{2}}]}^{+}}{{[Cl{{O}_{4}}]}^{-}}. DIchlorine hexoxide could be produced by carrying out a reaction between chlorine dioxide which has the chemical formula ClO2Cl{{O}_{2}} and ozone, which has a chemical formula O3{{O}_{3}}. So the reaction is represented below,
2 ClO2 +2 O3 2 ClO3 +2 O2  Cl2O6 +2 O22~Cl{{O}_{2}}~+{ }2~{{O}_{3}}~\to { }2~Cl{{O}_{3}}~+{ }2~{{O}_{2}}~\to ~C{{l}_{2}}{{O}_{6}}~+{ }2~{{O}_{2}}
Now if we consider the second reactant in the question, it is sodium hydroxide, which is a well-known base. It has a hydroxide group which could be liberated very easily and so it is a type of strong base. Now if we consider the reaction which is given in the question, it will proceed as follows,
C12O6+NaOHNaClO3+NaClO4+H2OC{{1}_{2}}{{O}_{6}}+NaOH\to NaCl{{O}_{3}}+NaCl{{O}_{4}}+{{H}_{2}}O
Now we can see that the DIchlorine hexoxide and sodium hydroxide reacts in order to form sodium chlorate with the chemical formula, NaClO3NaCl{{O}_{3}} along with sodium perchlorate which has the chemical formula NaClO4NaCl{{O}_{4}} and water which we know has the chemical formula H2O{{H}_{2}}O.
Now if we consider the options which are provided in the question, if we look at the option A, it is sodium perchlorate which is one of the products of the reaction, as well as option D, which is sodium chlorate, also a product of the same reaction.

So, the correct options are option A and option D .

Note: The DIchlorine hexoxide in reaction with sodium hydroxide forms three products namely sodium chlorate, sodium perchlorate and water.
This reaction could be used for the manufacture of sodium chlorate and perchlorate.
