Question

Mathematics Question on Various Forms of the Equation of a Line

Find the equation of the line which passes through the points (-1, 1) and (2, -4).

Answer

It is known that the equation of the line passing through points (x1, y1) and (x2, y2) is yy1=y2y1x2x1(xx1)y-y_1=\frac{y_2-y_1}{x_2-x_1}\left(x-x_1\right)
Therefore, the equation of the line passing through the points (-1, 1) and (2, -4) is
y1=412+1(x+1)y-1=\frac{-4-1}{2+1}\left(x+1\right)

y1=53(x+1)y – 1 =\frac{ -5}{3} (x + 1)

3(y1)=(5)(x+1)3 (y – 1) = (-5) (x + 1)
3y3=5x53y – 3 = -5x – 5
3y3+5x+5=03y – 3 + 5x + 5 = 0
i.e,5x+3y+2=0i.e,5x + 3y + 2 = 0
