Question

Physics Question on Waves

Find the distance between two consecutive nodes if a string has tension 0.25 N, mass per unit length is 1 mg/m and frequency is 250 Hz.

A

2 m

B

1 m

C

3 m

D

1.5 M

Answer

1 m

Explanation

Solution

The speed of transverse wave on the string will
be, v=Tmv=\sqrt{\frac{T}{m}}
v=0.251×106v=\sqrt{\frac{0.25}{1\times10^{-6}}}
v=500m/secv = 500 \,m/sec
and
v=fλv = f \lambda
So, λ=500250\lambda=\frac{500}{250}
λ=2\lambda=2 m
Distance between two consecutive nodes is given by,
=λ2=1=\frac{\lambda}{2}=1 m
So, the correct option is (B) : 1 m.
