Question
Mathematics Question on Derivatives
Find the derivative of cos x from first principle.
Answer
Let f (x) = cos x. Accordingly, from the first principle,
f'(x)=limh→0 hf(x+h)−f(x)
=limh→0 hcos(x+h)−cos(x)
=limh→0 [hcosxcosh−sinxsinh−cosx]
=limh→0 [h−cosx(1−cosh)−hsinxsinh]
=-cos(limh→0 h1−cosh) - sinx limh→0(hsinh)
=-cosx(0 ) - sinx(1) [limh→0 h1−cosh =0 and limh→0 hsinh = 1]
=-sinx
∴f'(x) = -sinx
