Explanation

Solution

The female reproductive system is an essential organ in our body which is responsible for producing female egg cells. It is the site at which fertilisation with the sperm takes place. It houses the developing embryo until complete gestation.

Complete answer:
The woman's reproductive system is energetic before, during and after fertilization as well. It consists of the following parts:
i) A pair of ovaries: Ovaries produce and keep ovum in them. They also produce a female hormone called estrogen. One egg is produced every month. These are an important reproductive structure in females.

ii) Fallopian tubes (Oviducts): It occurs in pairs. They are the site of fertilisation. They connect ovaries with the uterus. There are three parts of the fallopian tube, infundibulum, ampulla and isthmus. The ampulla is the site of fertilisation of the egg and the sperm. Fimbriae are fringe like tissue which is present at the end of the fallopian tube.

iii) Uterus: This is the sac-like shape in the lower section of the abdomen in the woman's body. It is one in number. Uterus is the site of implantation for the embryo. This is the site which is concerned in the development of the foetus. The uterus holds the developing embryo during the duration of gestation. It is also called the womb.

iv) Cervix: This is the shape which is present at the decreased area of the uterus. The cervix opens to allow the entry of sperm and for the infant birth.

v) Vagina: It is the part which connects the cervix to the exterior. It is the route for the penis during copulation and also for foetus during delivery. This is additionally called the birth canal through which the infant comes out.

vi) Clitoris is the small structure present at the top of vulva above the urethral opening.

Note: Female reproductive system has two functions -
-Production of woman gametes called ovum/egg.
- Providing diet and protecting the developing foetus.
- The important female hormones like estrogen, progesterone help in proper functioning of the reproductive system, maintain body weight, muscles etc.
