Find out the correct option regarding cell wall
A) Cell wall provides shape and rigidity to the cells
B) Cell wall is porous and allows the movement of specific substances only
C) Cell wall is not able to provide protection against mechanical injury
D) Both A) and B)
Solution
Every cell does not possess a cell wall. Only cells of few organisms possess an extra outer covering called cell wall which will provide protection to the entire cell from mechanical stress.
Complete answer:
Bacteria possess cell walls but they are not alike, gram positive bacteria possess cell walls which is different from gram negative. Plants possess a cell wall over the Plasma membrane. Animal cells do not have a cell wall, the only external covering of the cell membrane or plasma membrane which is composed of lipid bilayer along with other proteins and carbohydrates.
Cell of a plant is surrounded by an external covering which is made up of cellulose and other proteins, cell wall provides mechanical strength to the cell, it also protects mechanical stability to plant cells, there are cells within plants which is not only composed of cell wall in order to obtain strength but also have deposition of some molecule such as lignin and more.
Cell wall provides shape to the cell, cell membrane being dynamic it can change its shape to someone that might differ the structural integrity of a part of the plant in order to avoid that cell wall providing stable structure to the plant cell.
Hence the correct answer is option D.
Note: Cell wall provides shape and rigid to the plant cell, they also help in transportation of molecules across the cell wall. Cell wall is not dynamic and hence several receptors in order to allow a very limited amount of specific molecules to move across them.
