Fill in the blanks with suitable words. The rays used to show bone structure is __________.
Solution
Have you ever got fractured or have you ever heard of someone getting a fracture. We know that in fracture what happens is one of our bones get dislocated or sometimes even get damaged. When we approach a doctor for the treatment the first step taken by the doctor is to see the structure of our fractured bones using the rays that show the bone structure. The images created by these rays show the bone structure in different shades of black and white.
Complete Step by Step Solution:
As we know, the rays used to show bone structure are X-ray.
X-ray is a type of radiation called electromagnetic waves and it is used to create pictures of the internal parts of our body. When there is any kind of problem in the bones, the first test any doctor recommends before starting the treatment is the X-ray and with the help of
X-ray result, the doctor gets to know how severe the problem is and hence, can start the treatment accordingly.
Bone X-ray uses a small dose of ionizing radiation to produce pictures of any bone in the body and it is commonly used to diagnose fractured bones or find dislocation.
We know that X rays can pass through parts of the body. Different parts of the body absorb X-rays to varying degrees. Dense bone absorbs much of the radiation while soft tissues absorb less, as a result bones appear white on X ray, soft tissues such as muscles, fat and organs show up in the shade of grey and air appears black.
Note: It is interesting to know that X-rays were first observed by a German Scientist Wilhelm Conrad Roentgen. He discovered that firing a stream of these rays through hands and arms created a detailed image of bones inside. When an X-ray is taken, X-ray sensitive film is put on one side of your body, and X-rays are shot through you. As bones are more dense and absorb more rays than the skin so, shadows of bones are left on the film while the skin appears transparent.
