Question
Question: Explain the importance of reproduction in organisms....
Explain the importance of reproduction in organisms.
Solution
Reproduction also referred to as breeding is a process by which new offsprings are produced by the fusion of gametes from the parents. When male and female parents are involved it is known as sexual mode of reproduction.
Complete answer:
The process by which new individuals are produced by the parents is known as reproduction. In humans, reproduction occurs via the fusion of male and female gametes. here are two types of reproduction:
Asexual mode of reproduction
In this mode of reproduction, no fusion of gametes takes place and this is majorly seen in unicellular animals and animals of lower organisms.
Sexual mode of reproduction
It is the process by which male and female gametes fuse and give rise to a new organism. The male reproductive system consists of sperm ducts, penis and testes which is responsible for producing sperms. The female reproductive system consists of ovaries which produce eggs, oviducts and uterus.
Importance of reproduction :
It maintains a balance between the death rate and birth rate.
In reproduction new individuals replace the old.
The number of species in the ecosystem increases by the help of reproduction.
The genes are transmitted from the parents to the offspring.
This leads to the evolution of species.
The result of reproduction variations in species and their ability to survive in different environments.
Note: The advantages of sexual reproduction over asexual mode of reproduction are,
There is more genetic variability allowing survival of species in a population.
The chances of survival of offspring produced by sexual mode are higher than that produced by asexual mode.
The individuals formed have characteristics of both the parents due genetic recombination.
