Explain the functional correlation of the circulatory system with the respiratory, digestive and excretory system.
Solution
The circulatory system or cardiovascular system is composed of blood and blood vessels by which blood is circulated throughout the body. Blood is connective tissue. It connects different tissues and supplies them nutrients as well as it removes the waste material from tissues.
Complete answer:
The circulatory system is connected with different organs of the body. The main function of the circulatory systems are-
• Supply of nutrients like glucose, amino acids, lipids, vitamins etc.
• Supply of oxygen (O2) the different parts of the body.
• Removal of the waste material from different organs as well as cells of the body like urea carbon dioxide etc.
Thus, the circulatory system has a close connection with the digestive system, respiratory system and the excretory system.
The digested food material contains important nutrients, which are absorbed through blood or lymph. The blood supplies these different nutrients to all parts and organs of the body where the cells of each system take up these nutrients according to their requirement.
The respiratory system helps in the inhalation of oxygen and exhalation of carbon dioxide from the body. The inhaled oxygen is absorbed from the lungs with the help of haemoglobin. It binds 4 molecules of oxygen and transports them to different tissues and cells of the body for cellular respiration and energy production.
The nutrients are metabolised in the cells. They are converted into other substances and some of these are waste materials, which needs to be removed or excreted out of the body like carbon dioxide, ammonia, urea etc. these waste materials are transported from tissues and body cells to their respective excretory organs through blood. For example, carbon dioxide is transported to the lungs from where it moves out of the body with exhaled air. Ammonia is converted into urea and urea is transported to kidneys through blood where it is filtered out from the blood and passed out of the body as urine.
Note: The circulatory system acts as a medium, which helps in the transport of respiratory gases, nutrients obtained from the digestion of food like glucose, amino acids, lipids, vitamins etc. and it also helps in the removal of waste material from different parts of the body.
