Explain the function of the following part of an electric motor: Split ring.
Solution
Recall that the electric motor is a device that converts electrical energy into mechanical energy. An electric motor works on the principle that a current carrying conductor produces a magnetic field around it. This causes the loop to rotate continuously.
Complete answer:
A split ring in an electric motor consists of a simple ring or cylindrical shell. It is also known as a commutator. It is split into two or more parts and rotates with a stationary circuit. The parts of a split ring are insulated from each other.
In order to make the electric motor rotate continuously in the same direction, it is important that the current in the coil should be reversed. Split ring or the commutator is used to reverse the direction of the current in the coil. In an electric coil after the coil rotates half a rotation, the direction of the current reverses but the direction of the couple rotating the coil remains the same. As a result the coil rotates in the same direction.
Note: It is important to note that an electric motor is made of different parts. Some of them are a field magnet, brushes, power source, armature coil and armature core. Since the current carrying conductor is at right angles to the magnetic field. Therefore, a torque is produced. The electric motor is of two types: an a.c. motor and a d.c. motor. The a.c. The motor has alternating current as input but a d.c. The motor has direct current as input.
