Question
Question: Explain how spectrum is formed....
Explain how spectrum is formed.
Solution
Hint: To answer this question, we need to know the meaning of spectrum. By spectrum, we mean a condition, that is not limited to a specific set of values which can be varied, without any steps, across a continuous way. On the basis of the definition, we can describe the formation of a spectrum.
Complete step by step answer:
So we can say that spectrum refers to invisible radio frequencies that wireless signals travelling over distances. Now we are coming to the formation of the spectrum.
We know that visible light or white light is made up of seven colours. The light waves of different colours vary in their own frequency and wavelength domain. When a white light which is incident on a glass prism enters the glass prism, it suffers refraction. The prism splits the incident white light ray into a band of colours.
It is known as that the higher the frequency (lower will be the wavelength), the refraction will be more. Because of this reason the violet light, having higher frequency refracts more than red light, having lower frequency and higher wavelength. Similarly, the other colour light waves will also bend accordance with the incident white light, while passing through the prism.
Thus, the ray of different coloured waves will emerge alone and we can distinguish between them. This band of the coloured components of a light beam is known as spectrum.
Note: The sequence of colours from the bottom to top in a spectrum is represented by the word VIBGYOR. The colours represented from the bottom to top are Violet, Indigo, Blue, Green, Yellow, Orange and Red.
