Explain briefly the following terms used in communication systems:
i) Transducer
ii) Repeater
iii) Amplification
Solution
These are some terms included in the last chapter of class 12th Physics book. Recall them. They are generally used in the transfer of signals wirelessly from one place to another. Recall what the basic components of a communication system are.
Complete step by step solution:
Transducer: It is a component of both the transmission end and receiver end. It is used to convert sound signals into electrical signals in the transmission end and again converting the electrical signals into sound waves. It is a very useful device as audio signals cannot be transmitted as it is. It has to be converted into electrical impulses.
Repeater: For transmitting the signal to a larger distance, the height of the tower must be increased. However there is a limit as to how much a tower can be made. Thus to transmit the signals to a larger distance, there is a need for some alternative. The repeater does the work. It is a station which just receives and transmits the signal. It is useful for transmitting signals to a larger distance.
Amplification: When a signal is passed through a transmission medium, the signal loses energy and becomes weak. Hence it may not even reach the receiver. In order to receive a fairly strong signal, the signal is boosted. This is known as amplification. Thus amplification is the process by which the power of a signal is boosted.
Note: A basic communication system consists of an information source, a transmitter, a link, and a receiver. The basic parts of the transmitter are the transducer, modulator, amplifier and antenna. The basic parts of a receiver are pickup antenna, demodulator, amplifier and transducer.
