Question
Data Interpretation Question on Data Sufficiency
Each item is followed by two statements A and B. Answer question using the instructions.
l₁, l₂ and l₃ are lines in a plane. Is l₁ perpendicular to l₃?
A. l₁ is perpendicular to l₂
B. l₂ is perpendicular to l₃
the question can be answered by one statement alone, but cannot be answered by using the other statement alone.
the question can be answered by using either statement alone.
the question can be answered by using both the statements together but cannot be answered by using either statement alone.
the question cannot be answered even by using both the statements together.
the question can be answered by using both the statements together but cannot be answered by using either statement alone.
Solution
Clearly, each statement alone is insufficient, as there is information about only two lines in each statement.
By combining, both statements, we get that if I1 is perpendicular to I2 and I2 is perpendicular to I3, then I1 is parallel to I3
Thus, the answer to the question is : No,I1 is not perpendicular to I3 , which is feasible by combining both statements
The correct option is (C):If the question can be answered by using both the statements together, but cannot be answered by using either statement alone
