Question
Question: Does dominant follicle means ovulation?...
Does dominant follicle means ovulation?
Solution
Follicle size and status is the important thing during the reproduction process. It is also important in fertility treatment. During the mid cycle ovulation oocytes complete their development. For the remaining oocytes, growth will cease and undergo atresia. During the ovulation process one or more follicles are selected per cycle. In the growing pool the follicle undergoes competition. Finally the dominant one is selected for the ovulation process.
Complete answer:
Dominant follicle is also known as the graafian follicle. Dominant follicle is the fluid filled structure in the ovary. It grows bigger enough to release a mature egg during the menstrual cycle. Dominant follicle can take time to grow for around 20days. Dominant follicle will grow during LH. Menstrual cycles begin when the hypothalamus of the brain releases gonadotropin releasing hormone. It acts on the pituitary gland so it will secrete the follicle stimulating hormone and luteinizing hormone. So these hormones are the reason for the creation of dominant follicles by triggering the maturation. The size of a follicle which is less than 18millimeter is called the antral follicle and from 18to 22 millimeter ranges the follicle is called the dominant follicle.
Ovulation is the process of when an egg is released from the dominant follicle in the ovary to the fallopian tube. In this tube the sperm will fertilize the ovum. This process will only occur during the menstrual cycle. So that woman can become pregnant by this dominant follicle. The average diameter of the dominant follicle is 22 to 24 millimeters. It has the biggest size and also grows fast. But the growth of the follicle doesn't mean it contains the mature egg. Dominant follicle will release the hormone called estradiol in the bloodstream. If the estradiol production is increased in the blood stream then it will give the information to Pituitary glands to reduce the production of FSH. After the estradiol production the endometrium which is the reason for pregnancy.
Note:
Follicle is the important one in fertilization and it has two duties. They are oocyte maturation and release and steroid synthesis. Steroid genesis is used to regulate the growth of oocytes. It gives the proper environment during the reproduction process in the transportation of gametes and nidation. After releasing the ovum, the remaining dominant follicle turns into the corpus luteum. Sometimes more than one follicle is produced and one is turned into the corpus luteum.
