Question

Question: Distinguish between: Acidity of bases and basicity of acids....

Distinguish between:
Acidity of bases and basicity of acids.

Explanation

Solution

In Chemistry, there are three types of substances namely acidic, basic, and neutral. It all is related to the amount of hydrogen ion that the compound can generate. The acidic substance turns moist litmus paper bred and the basic ones turn the litmus paper blue. The neutral compounds don't affect the litmus paper.

Complete step by step answer:
There are three types of compounds namely acidic, basic, and neutral. This classification depends on the ability of the compound to release hydronium ions in the solution in water. Hydrogen ions combine with water molecules to form hydroxyl ions. It can be represented as [H3O]+{[{H_3}O]^ + } .
No compound is purely acidic or purely basic. The acidity or basicity of the compound is measured as pHpH of the compound. It is a scale of 1 to 14 which tells the number of hydronium ions the compound can release. Here 1 is the most acidic and 14 being the most basic.
But it also doesn’t show that the compound is purely acidic or purely basic. At a specific time, a compound shows the nature of both the acid and the base. It’s just that one nature is predominant than another and thus is shown in the results.

Aciditybasicity
The acidity of bases is the number of hydroxyl ions that the basic molecule can produce in the aqueous solution. The basicity of the acids is the number of hydronium ions that the compound can produce in the aqueous solution.
The acidity of a Bronsted acid can be expressed by the help acid dissociation constant of the compound in water or some other specified medium. The measure of acidity is the pH scale. For Bronsted bases basicity means tendency of a compound to act like (proton) acceptor. The basicity of a chemical compound is expressed by the acidity of the conjugate acid

Note: pHpH paper is another medium for the more clear estimation of the acidity of the acid and the basicity of the bases. The compound is brought in contact with the damped pHpH paper. The paper changes its color based on the pHpH of the compound which is under consideration.
Compared with litmus paper which shows only acidic and basic, the pHpH paper also shows the strength of acidity or basicity.
