Direction: Answer the questions on the basis of figure.

(i) Choose the correct option of temperature at which carbon reduces FeO to iron and produces CO.

(ii) Below point ‘A’ FeO can ________________.

(iii) For the reduction of FeO at the temperature corresponding to point D, which of the following statements is correct?

A

Below temperature at point A.

B

Approximately at the temperature corresponding to point A

C

Above temperature at point A but below temperature at point D.

D

Above temperature at point A.

Explanation

Solution

Ans.

Sol. (i)(4) : A metal oxide (FeO) placed higher in the diagram can be reduced to metal (Fe) by the element (3) involved in the formation of the oxide (CO) placed lower in the diagram this is possible at above temperature at point A.

(ii) (1) : Below point ‘A’ FeO can be reduced by

carbon monoxide only as the curve of formation of CO2\mathrm { CO } _ { 2 } from CO lies below the oxidation curve of Fe.

(iii) (1) : At point D both the curves of oxidation of Fe and oxidation of CO intersect therefore at this point value for the overall reduction of FeO to Fe with CO is zero.
