Differentiate between the terms strong electrolyte and weak electrolyte. (Stating any two differences)
Solution
Hint : Electrolyte is a liquid or gel which contains ions and can be decomposed by electrolysis (Electrolysis is the Chemical decomposition of substances by passage of electric current). It produces an electrically conducting solution when dissolved in polar solvent such as water.
Complete step by step solution :
Strong electrolytes are compounds that completely dissociates into ions when completely dissolved in water. There is a slight increase in conductance on dilution of strong electrolytes. They are good conductors of electricity. They have strong interionic attraction at moderate concentration, whereas weak electrolytes do not dissociate completely when dissolved in water. Their conductance increases rapidly with dilution especially near infinite dilution. They are not very good conductors of electricity. Interionic attractions are not strong even when concentration is very high. Examples of strong electrolyte include strong acids, strong bases and some salts whereas examples of weak electrolyte include weak acids, weak bases and some salts.
Additional information: Electrolytes are involved in many essential processes in our body. They play an important role in conducting nervous impulses, contracting muscles, keeping us hydrated and regulating the pH level of our body. Some electrolytes found in our body are sodium, potassium, chloride, calcium, magnesium, phosphate, bicarbonate. These electrolytes are required for various processes of our body.
Electrolyte calcium is needed for muscle contraction. Magnesium is also required in this process so that muscle fibers can slide outwards and muscles can relax after contraction. Water must be kept in the right amount both inside and outside each cell in our body. Sodium helps in maintaining fluid balance through osmosis. Osmosis is a process in which water moves through cell membranes from a dilute solution, dilute solution means more water and fuel electrolytes to concentrate solution, by concentrating solution we mean less water and more electrolyte. This prevents cells from bursting.
Note : Please remember that in terms of dissociation constant (α) strong and weak electrolytes can be classified as
α>30% Strong electrolyte
α<3% Weak electrolyte
3%<α<30% Medium electrolyte
These are the four quantum numbers. With the help of these four quantum numbers we can easily find out information about electrons. No two electrons can have all the four quantum numbers same.
