Question: Describe various causes of loss of biodiversity....

Describe various causes of loss of biodiversity.

Explanation

Solution

Biodiversity, means biological diversity, refers to the different types of living organisms like plants, grasses, animals, insects, worms, fishes, birds present in a particular geographical area. There are millions of different types of living organisms present within the biosphere including all types of ecosystems (terrestrial, aquatic or marine).

Complete answer:
Loss of biodiversity refers to a decrease in the variability and uniqueness of biodiversity. It decreases the number of species in different ecosystems and in the whole biosphere. The causes behind the loss of diversity are-

Loss of habitat and their degradation:
The destruction of natural habitat, the living space as well as the amount of food. Those species that migrate from such habitats will become extinct.
Invasion of foreign species:
There are many migratory species from foreign locations where they grow and compete with existing species for food and living space.
Over-harvesting and over-grazing:
When the living organisms are harvested beyond their replenishing capacity, their number will start decreasing gradually their extinction.
Environmental pollution:
Pollution is one of the major causes leading to loss of biodiversity because the polluted environment causes health problems to the exposed organisms leading to a decrease in their number if they cannot adapt to the changing environment.
Change in the climatic pattern:
Due to the emission of different gases like CFC, carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide etc., the overall environment is getting hotter causing global warming. It leads to change in the seasonal and climatic pattern about the globe severe loss to biodiversity

Note:
To keep our green planet earth healthy, we need to maintain biodiversity by reducing those factors which are responsible for the loss of biodiversity like pollution, global warming etc.
